The Smallest House in Great Britain
Berthlwyd Hall Holiday Park - February 27th 2019
Everyone who has been to the delightful harbour front in Conwy, whether they were enjoying chips and avoiding swooping gulls, or instead opted for the safer option of an ice cream, would have marvelled at the tiny red house at the end of the housing terrace.
The house is better known as 'The Smallest House in Great Britain'.
The backstory
The house dates back to the 16th Century when Conwy would have just been coming out of its medieval heyday. It remained a home until the year 1900 with local fisherman Robert Jones being its last resident. Robert measured a towering 6 foot 3! So tall was Robert, and so small his house, he couldn't even stand up straight in it. The living conditions were so bad that he was eventually kicked out of the house by the council who deemed it unsuitable for habitation.
The House
It is strikingly painted red and sits a few hundred yards from the imposing Conwy castle and just a few yards from the river Conwy's water edge. The floor area is just 10ft by 5.9ft with the living area on the ground floor and a bedroom upstairs.
... and today?
It is still owned by the descendants of Robert Jones who have turned it into a popular tourist attraction where you can take a tour of the house and learn about the history of the building by the attendant wearing traditional Welsh clothing.
The cost is £1 for adults and 50p for children - a bargain and well worth a visit! Just watch out for the seagulls when you have your fish and chips afterwards!
