Walking your dog in winter months
Berthlwyd Hall Holiday Park - January 29th 2020
We've now closed for the season, reopening again in early March. We are a dog friendly park, from out holiday home owners through to our Park Manager, Christine. Anyone who's been to Berthlwyd will undoubtedly know Beau and Dotty, Christine's friendly pugs.
It's set to be a gruelling winter according to the news and forecasts, sow we thought this month we'd look at best practise when walking dogs in the most trying of conditions.
Stay warm
Not just you, but your four-legged friend too! Dogs are also susceptible to hypothermia and can also develop frostbite.
Breeds with short coats will benefit from a coat of their own. Doggy fashion is now a huge industry with designer brands all having ranges. Your pooch could be just as suave as you!
Look out for dogs that are uncomfortable on their feet; lifting up their legs, whining, or needing to stop regularly. Materials such as salt and grit can be really painful to dogs paws. So, as well as a trendy jacket your dog may need some booties too.
Safety first
It gets dark quick now, so try and stay to will lit and/or popular routes with other people around. One nasty fall could quickly become a serious issue.
Wash your dogs paws after a walk to get rid of any salt or grit and lookout for things getting caught in long hair around the paws.
In areas near frozen water, keep your dog on the lead. Dogs also can become disorientated in snowy conditions so bear that in mind.
When you can't go out
Storms can be dangerous. Especially around Berthlwyd with falling branches. Listen carefully to news and weather reports and follow their advice.
